During my three months at Amazon, I was tasked with identifying why, when packing multiple items in a single order, some items would be missing despite being indicated as ready to pack by the chute light. My daily tasks consisted of identifying potential scanning and packing issues within a high-volume production line. I used KPI metrics and Amazon’s ATLAS system to identify defect trends, investigate root causes, and prioritize areas for improvement. Through structured root-cause analysis, I helped reduce missing-item defects from approximately 5,000 to 3,000 DPPM while implementing process and layout changes without negatively affecting production throughput.
This experience taught me to approach manufacturing problems from both a technical and operational perspective. Rather than focusing only on the defect itself, I considered how scanning procedures, workstation layout, associate workflow, equipment behavior, and production constraints could contribute to failures. I worked cross-functionally to validate potential causes and implement corrective actions that could realistically operate in a high-volume environment.
My proudest achievement was contributing to a 40% reduction in missing-item DPPM, while learning how to use production data to turn an initially broad problem into measurable root causes and practical solutions.
